Ashley + John booked with me at the end of 2019 for a 2021 wedding. Little did we know that the plans for their wedding would end up shifting because of the Covid-19 pandemic. They eventually settled on eloping in Portland, Maine, at the Blind Tiger Inn on the original date they were supposed to get married. It was just the three of us, plus their good friends, one of which acted as officiant.
They had an intimate ceremony with minimalist and thoughtful details with their friends and family Zooming in from a computer they set up. They followed the ceremony with an official first dance, a round of celebratory cocktails. Then we strolled the streets of Portland for some photo opportunities.
One of the things that I love about getting out and about for portraits is the cheers and congratulations that strangers on the street will extend to couples. As we headed down to Old Port, people were clapping, cheering from their cars, and it made the day feel a bit more celebratory even without a big crowd of loved ones.
This was my first time photographing an elopement, and it honestly felt like such an honor to be one of the sole in-person witnesses’ to their marriage. It was a relaxed day, and it allowed for lots of time for soaking every moment in.
They plan to celebrate in person with their friends and family in April 2022, and I can’t wait to celebrate with them. Congrats, Ashley + John!
